If you have gone looking for a run and gun competition near Tampa, you already know the problem. Search results give you indoor ranges, concealed carry classes, and gun shows. Almost nothing that involves running with a rifle.
So here is the actual map. Every event within reasonable driving distance of Tampa Bay that combines physical work with live fire, what each one is, where it runs, and who it suits. We run three of these ourselves, and we will be upfront about that when we get to them.
what “run and gun” actually means
The term gets used for three different things, which is part of why searching for it is frustrating.
Run and gun biathlon. A long course, usually three to seven miles, with shooting stations along the way. You carry your rifle, pistol, ammo, and water the whole distance. Think trail race with stages. These are endurance events first.
Tactical fitness. Shorter stages that pair a fitness element with a shooting element, back to back, scored on time. Sandbag carries, sled drags, and burpees, then engage targets while your heart rate is redlined. Closer to a CrossFit competition where half the workouts involve a carbine.
Two-gun and multigun. Primarily a shooting match. Pistol and rifle across dynamic stages, with movement, but the fitness is incidental rather than programmed. Some matches bolt on an optional fitness element.
They demand different things. A strong runner can survive a biathlon on cardio alone. Tactical fitness will find your strength deficit in about four minutes. Two-gun will expose your gun handling in front of everybody.
in the tampa bay area
gun craft, ruskin
2102 24th St SE, Ruskin, FL 33570. Roughly 30 minutes south of Tampa in Hillsborough County. Family-owned outdoor range, open to the public, and the busiest competition calendar in the immediate area.
Regular shooting matches run most weekends. USPSA on the first and third Sundays, Steel Challenge on the second, cowboy action on the fourth. Those USPSA matches are one of the best entry points in the area if you have never shot a match before. Local squads, low cost, and nobody expects you to know what you are doing. If you want to build gun handling before you add fitness, those are the cheapest reps you will find.
We run our monthly TACFIT events here, plus our monthly two-gun match under our own ruleset, adapted from PCSL rather than copied from it, with an optional fitness division. TACFIT is the tactical fitness format described above: functional movement paired with live fire, scored across stages, with beginner, intermediate, and elite divisions in men’s and women’s categories. Beginners can substitute movements or drop weight on any stage.
wyoming antelope club, pinellas park
3700 126th Ave N, Pinellas Park, FL 33762, operating publicly as Pinellas Outdoor Shooting Range. One of the largest USPSA clubs in the country and the biggest public range in Pinellas County, with USPSA, IDPA, Steel Challenge, high power rifle, shotgun, and archery all on the calendar.
The reason it belongs on this list is the on-ramp. They run an intro to action shooting class on the first Saturday of most months at a genuinely reasonable price, with classroom time and then live stage work. If the shooting half of these events is what intimidates you, that class solves it faster than anything else in the bay area.
manatee gun and archery club, myakka city
1805 Logue Rd, Myakka City, FL 34251. About an hour southeast of Tampa. A 350 acre facility with a public line, three action bays, a pistol caliber carbine course, and rifle out to 600 yards, which opens up formats the smaller ranges cannot host.
Florida Multigun runs here monthly and is one of the best matches in the region. Rifle, pistol, and shotgun across timed stages, registration through PractiScore, and signups open a week out and fill fast. They also run night multigun, which adds low light work and a very different set of problems. Apex Shootout runs here as well, a tactical-style shooting competition with a separate precision rifle match under the same banner.
We run Ruck. Shoot. Repeat. here quarterly. It is the closest thing in the Tampa Bay area to a true run and gun format: a weighted ruck around a 250 yard loop, then a “know your limits” steel array at 100 yards shot largest plate to smallest, scored AMRAP style across a 45 minute heat. Thirty pounds for men, twenty for women. Capped at 20 shooters.
hernando sportsman’s club, brooksville
An 80 acre facility inside the Chassahowitzka Wildlife Management Area, about an hour north of Tampa, and one of the largest public shooting facilities in Florida. Their action shooting calendar covers rifle, pistol, pistol caliber carbine, shotgun, and night matches. Not tactical fitness, but a genuinely good place to build the shooting half.
worth the drive
the patriot games, statewide
Not a single venue. The Patriot Games runs events at ranges across Florida, so the drive depends on which one you enter. A two-day event that spans pistol and rifle work from concealed carry, functional fitness, and basic survival skills. Bigger production, bigger commitment, and a real destination match. If you want a season goal, this is a reasonable one. Watch their schedule and pick the stop closest to you.
the tactical games, holt and element training complex
Five to seven hours for the main events, up in the panhandle near Pensacola and Fort Walton Beach. The largest name in the sport and the one most people are actually training toward. Multiple divisions, obstacle-based stages, national-level fields.
They also run Skirmish, a one-day version of the format, roughly every other month, and those land in Central Florida. That is a far shorter drive and a far smaller commitment than a full weekend in the panhandle, and it is the most direct way to find out whether the main event is worth training for. If The Tactical Games is your target, we wrote a separate piece on how to structure your training for it.
talon range run and gun, midway
Just outside Tallahassee, around five hours from Tampa, usually in March. A roughly three mile two-gun biathlon with obstacles and five shooting stations, distances from close range out to about 250 yards, in open and plate carrier divisions. This is the closest thing to a classic run and gun biathlon that Florida hosts, which tells you something about how thin the format is in this state.
which one should you start with
Honest answer, and it is not always us.
If you have never shot a competition of any kind, go to a USPSA or Steel Challenge match first. Gun Craft runs both, most weekends, for not much money. If you want a little structure before you show up cold, take the intro class at Wyoming Antelope Club first. Either way you will learn range commands, how a squad works, and how to not be the person everybody is waiting on. Do that once and every event on this list gets easier.
If you are fitness-strong but have never shot competitively, come to a TACFIT event. That is the specific person these were built for. You do not need competition experience. You need to handle a firearm safely, and we will walk you through everything else on the day at no extra charge.
If you shoot well and want to find out how badly cardio has betrayed you, the optional fitness division at our two-gun match is a cheap way to find out.
If you want the long-course biathlon experience, it is Ruck. Shoot. Repeat. locally, or a drive to Talon.
what you need for a first event
Less than you think. The gear conversation in this sport gets ridiculous, and most of it is people justifying purchases.
For a tactical fitness event you need a rifle, a pistol, a belt-mounted holster that actually retains the gun while you move, magazines and a way to carry them, eye and ear protection, and shoes you can run in. A plate carrier is required in our elite and intermediate divisions and optional in beginner. Bring water. Bring more water than that.
Every one of our rulesets is published in full, including division standards, scoring, ammunition restrictions, and safety rules. Read them before you register so nothing on match day is a surprise.
the short version
The Tampa Bay area has a decent shooting match calendar and a thin tactical fitness calendar. That gap is the reason we started running monthly events instead of waiting for a destination match twice a year.
Everybody crawls to the line gasping. That is the point, and it is the same for the person who won last month.
Find the next event and grab a slot before it caps.
