run and gun in Florida: the format, and what actually exists here

by DEFCON Tactical Fitness ·

Run and gun means three different things, which is why searching for it is frustrating. Here is what the format actually is, an honest map of what runs in Florida, and the closest thing to it near Tampa Bay.

if you’ve searched for a run and gun match in Florida, you already know the problem. the term gets applied to at least three different formats, and once you filter for the one you meant, the state is close to empty.

here’s what the format actually is and what genuinely runs here.

what is a run and gun match?

it’s an endurance event with shooting stations built into it. you cover a course on foot carrying your gear, and you stop along the way to engage targets.

the classic version is sometimes called a run and gun biathlon. a long one way course, often three to seven miles, with stations spaced along it. you carry your rifle, ammo, and water the whole distance. scoring is total elapsed time with penalties added for misses, so it rewards runners who can still shoot after their heart rate spikes.

that’s the format people usually mean. the trouble is that the same three words also get used for tactical fitness events, where the movement is shorter and programmed as workouts rather than distance, and occasionally for practical shooting matches that simply involve moving between positions. those are different sports with different demands.

how is it different from a shooting match?

a shooting match tests marksmanship and gun handling. a run and gun tests whether either of those survive when you’re exhausted.

that sounds like a small distinction and it is not. static marksmanship is a fine motor skill practiced from a stable platform. the whole point of this format is to remove the stable platform. a strong runner with mediocre marksmanship often beats an excellent shooter with no engine, which is exactly why the format exists.

what run and gun events actually exist in Florida?

very few, and the true long-course version is close to a single event.

the closest thing to a classic biathlon that the state hosts runs near Tallahassee, usually in March. roughly three miles, obstacles, five shooting stations, distances from close range out to about 250 yards, with open and plate carrier divisions. it’s a genuinely good event and it’s about five hours from Tampa.

the larger national name in the broader category runs its main events in the panhandle, near Pensacola and Fort Walton Beach, which is five to seven hours from the Tampa Bay area. they also run a shorter one day version roughly every other month, and those sometimes land in Central Florida.

there are also two day multi-discipline events that move between ranges around the state. those are worth watching if you want a destination match rather than a regular one.

that’s most of it. for a state this size, with this much year round outdoor range access, it’s thin.

why is the format so thin here?

because it needs a piece of ground almost nobody has.

a long course biathlon needs safe distance for running, safe distance for shooting, and the two arranged so that neither endangers the other. most ranges are built as bays pointing at a berm, which is the correct design for shooting and the wrong shape for a three mile course. add Florida heat and the practical window narrows further.

so the events that do exist cluster in the panhandle where there’s more open land, and the peninsula gets very little.

what’s the closest thing near Tampa Bay?

Ruck. Shoot. Repeat., at Manatee Gun and Archery Club in Myakka City, about an hour from Tampa.

we built it to solve the ground problem rather than pretend it doesn’t exist. instead of a long one way course, you ruck a weighted pack around a roughly 250 yard loop behind the firing line, then engage a plate rack at 100 yards, then go again, repeating for a 45 minute cap.

it isn’t a three mile biathlon and we’re not going to claim it is. what it keeps is the thing that makes the format worth doing: shooting decisions made while your heart rate is at the ceiling. what it adds is a scoring twist. the rack runs largest plate to smallest, each hit is a point, and one miss zeros everything you scored in that round. you choose when to stop pushing.

rucks and weight are provided, so there’s nothing to buy before you enter. it’s rifle only, and the field caps at 20.

how do I get ready for one?

train the overlap, not the two halves separately.

the mistake is treating fitness and marksmanship as unrelated projects. the sport tests the seam between them. dry fire after a hard interval and watch what happens to your sight picture. practice safe handling while tired, because slinging and staging a rifle with shaking hands is its own skill. we wrote a longer piece on how to structure that training.

the other half of the answer is reps. a local match every month teaches things solo training can’t, which is the entire reason we run monthly instead of once a year.
